Blackhawk Residents Association General Meeting Minutes
November 17, 2009

The meeting was called to order by President Sherbondy at 7:06 pm. The minutes from the September 29, 2009 meeting were read. A motion was made by Lois Vogt to accept them with a
second by Claire Papiewski. The motion passed. The treasurer reported that we have a balance of $1070.46 as of 11-17-2009. Marge Zaage made a motion to accept the report as given
with a second by Nancy Roman. The motion passed.

Old Business
Dana reported that at the last meeting we had an informative presentation about the new Sherman Hospital and their future plans for the existing hospital. He also reminded us that there will
be an open house for the new Sherman Hospital on December 6th.

Dana put together a questionnaire for the living history project. Joan Anderson and Claire Papiewski have said they will fill it out. If anyone else is interested in this, talk to Dana.

Our next meeting will be a pot luck dinner to be held on January 26, 2010 at 6 pm. The Association will provide water, soda and coffee. Everyone should bring a dish to pass and their own
table service.

New Business
President Sherbondy informed us that Al Lahtinen passed away on October 26, 2009. Al was a past Vice President of our organization.

We had some discussion on how to get the word out about our meetings. It was decided that the meetings should be announced in the newspapers. We also need promote the meetings by
word of mouth. We will also post notices in some of the local business establishments. Another possibility is to see if the meeting information could be put in the Hanover Township
newsletter. Since there is a large Spanish speaking population in our area, we need to find someone translate our newsletters and website into Spanish.

We are working with Hanover Township and the Blackhawk Apartments to find a suitable date to hold a health fair. This would be done by the township and held at the apartment complex
clubhouse and be set up far enough in advance so that it can be announced in the Hanover Township newsletter.

The board decided at their last meeting to have some door prizes at this meeting. Corrine Eickstaedt was able to get some coupons from Baker Hill restaurant and Roll n Donuts. The lucky
people tonight are Warren Mogler for Roll n Donuts and Al Vogt for Baker Hill. The members liked this idea and suggested Jewel,
Wal-Mart, cash, a turkey, and a gas card as other ideas for door prizes. The board will decide who to contact and what monetary value to give out.
It was noted that Meals on Wheels will be operating out of St. Joe’s starting in December.

The meeting closed at 7:42pm with a motion from Joan Anderson and a second from Corrine Eickstaedt. Since our speaker for tonight, Mike Alft, left for some unknown reason we spent the
rest of the evening having some snacks and fellowshipping.

Respectively submitted,
John Ziegler, Secretary

Old Business
Living History update: Dana talked to Ruth Anne Hall and will have more contact with her. He expects to be involved in a conference call between the City of Elgin, the Elgin Historical
Society and Elgin Academy to try and work on details of the Living History project. As a side note about Elgin History, Warren Mogler has done artwork on the history of Elgin and also did a
lot of the masonry work on the houses in Blackhawk.

There has been no progress on the health fair with Hanover Township and Blackhawk Apartments. Joan Anderson will try again to make contact with both parties to set something up.

Corrine Eickstaedt was successful in getting our meeting announced in the Daily Herald this time and will try to have the next meeting announced in both the Herald and the Courier.

New Business
Dana was interviewed after the house explosion on January 12, 2010. He was able to get some good publicity for the Blackhawk Association when interviewed because he said that we,
as a group, would be collecting items for the Montes family. Dana posted the information on our web site and so far there have been over 300 hits on it.

Nancy Roman has made up cards to hand out with the upcoming meeting dates on them. They are in both Spanish and English.

Arby’s gave us enough coupon books so that everyone can take one with them. Any of our members can talk to businesses to try and solicit a donation for a door prize.

The Blackhawk Residents Association operates on a calendar year and it is time to pay dues again. The dues are $20 per household.

A budget was presented to the members for 2010. The projected income is $340 and the projected expenses are $605. This leaves a deficit of $265 which will be covered by the money
already in the bank. The hope is to have enough paying members to break even. Don Johnson made a motion to accept the budget as presented with a second by Warren Mogler. After
some discussion, the question was called for. The motion passed with one no vote. See attachment for budget details.

Dana again reminded everyone that new officers and board members will be needed for next year. He will also try to get the association signed up with the city for the Elgin Beautification
project.  A suggestion was made to help the Montes family landscape their yard after their house is rebuilt.

Our next meeting will be in March and Dana said he will try to have Nicor come out to talk to us. Hans Zaage said that Nicor was apparently checking out the neighborhood in recent
months for gas leaks.

Dana Sherbondy’s wife does scrap booking and would welcome anyone to join her. If you are interested, call Dana.

Joel and Carolina Montes were here tonight and gave us a first hand account of their house exploding. Carolina and Joel said that the family is very thankful to be alive and for the help
that everyone is giving them. Christy Pfuegler, who works for Home Depot, was here tonight and said that the Home Depot’s  “Team Depot” was going to help the Montes family by
building some furniture items for them. Dawn Wojtas made a suggestion that we pass the hat in order to give another donation the Montes family. This will be discussed at the February
board meeting.

A good neighbor award will be given to Nicholas Gutierrez for his help in getting the Montes family members out of their house after it exploded.

The door prizes for tonight were the plants on the tables. They were won by Al Papiewski, Lois Vogt, Mike Zaage, Joan Johnson, Bill Ingham, Judy Purkett and Joel Montes.

A motion to close the meeting was made at 8:20pm by Dawn Wojtas with a second by Bill Ingham. The motion passed.

Respectfully submitted,
John Ziegler, Secretary
Blackhawk Residents Association General Meeting Minutes       for March 30, 2010

The meeting was opened at 7:05 pm by President Sherbondy. The minutes from the January 26, 2010 meeting were read. A motion was made to approve them as read by Leigh Miller
with a second by Elinor Richoz. The motion passed. Marilyn Ziegler reported that we have a balance of $1425.97 as of tonight. Gordy Albright made a motion to accept the treasurer’s
report as given. A second was made by Joe Smolecki. The motion passed.

Presidents report:
Dana said that he thought the meeting and pot luck in January went very well. The church has been storing items that were donated for the Montes family. Most of those items were
picked up and delivered last weekend. We are still accepting cash donations for the Montes family if anyone wants to donate.

Pastor Mark Ahrens of the New Covenant Church spoke and told us that the church was started in 1969 in Carpentersville. There are some pictures on the wall that show some history of
the church.  He invited all of us to come to an Easter sunrise service at 6:30 am and then join them for breakfast.  Pastor Mark also said that there is a House of Prayer held in the old
Templo Cavario church. It is open 20 hours per week.

Old Business:
Dana was not able to find out anything about the Elgin Beautification project for this year. We think this has been dropped due to lack of funds. We will discuss what and where to do
something in the coming months. It was suggested to check with the library about helping with the butterfly garden.

Claire Papiewski and Joan Anderson have both been interviewed by Elgin Academy students for the Living History project. The students conduct the interview at the school and also film
it. Joan said this worked very well and she would go with anyone that would like to be interviewed. To do this you would need to call and set up an appointment. It might be good to have
several people go at once to be interviewed as a group. Ruth Ann Hall is trying to get a recorded history of Elgin and is starting with Blackhawk residents.

There is finally some progress on holding a health fair. This will be held at the Blackhawk Apartments and we will need to have some volunteers there to help out and promote the
Association. It will probably include cholesterol and glucose screening, checking blood pressure, flu shots and some other tests. It would be held on a weekday and will be open to the
public. The date still has to be determined.

An audit was conducted by Joe Smolecki and John Ziegler and everything was found to be in order.
Dana read some scam alerts that were given to him by Corrine Eickstaedt. This was done to keep everyone aware of various types of scams that are out there.

Mike Curtain of ‘Swan’, is looking for volunteers on April 17th to help plant trees at Burnidge Woods forest preserve. He hopes to plant about 2000 trees.

More plans will be made for the summer picnic and National Night out at the May meeting.

At 7:38 pm a motion was made by Elinor Richoz with a second by Joan Anderson. The motion passed.

At this time Councilman Dave Kaptain was introduced as our speaker for tonight. After he was done talking, we were able to ask questions to an Elgin police officer who was here tonight.

Respectfully submitted,
John Ziegler, Secretary
